Sitting vs moving meditations

Do you meditate?  What type of meditations do you do ? Are you sitting ?

I had tried on and off for decades. The 5-10 minutes at end of yoga class never really did much for me. Seems like I was busy with my to do list. And that is even after going through extensive yoga teacher training ! But over the past 3 years or more I have been really exploring different types of meditation. I want to share an insight that I had this morning . It is now 6:20 am. Having been awake since 3:30, yep …  I played in bed with cozy head phone strap on and once again went into a space I can no honestly describe . I have really gotten into binaural sound meditation amongst other ones. I lay there ( not sitting up ) and listen to  about an hour meditation  ( yep way too long for regular daytime use for me !) from Centerpointe called Holosync ( one called Dive then it goes into Immersion) .   Pretty wild I can literally feel my brain response . Some days I actually feel hung over from it other days huge clarity. But then I am also presently working with Chopra and Oprah’s 21 day live streaming meditation. This particular series is called “Getting Unstuck “.

SO what is the point of my rambling when I know my priorities of today are NOT writing on this blog? Well by break of dawn today  I was tending to pool matters and tree watering and then with the beautiful sunrise and decided to do Chopra/Oprah’s mediation while taking a brief  walk. This entailed  re-listening to day 9 of “Getting Unstuck”  (which seems to be VERY much issue for me.)

Re-listening seems to be important  cause it seems so often I forget what was said or REALLY struggle with the silent mantra mediation that is probably around 10 minutes (?) of the whole thing. WOW as I walked quietly at sunrise I found I was MUCH better at staying with the mantra than when I sit or lie down  (anytime of day.)

Considering that I have been enjoying a summer practice of doing laps 4-5 days a week for 40-65 minutes each swim, I can not help but wonder what it would be like to listen with water proof ear buds  and waterproof iPhone or iPod…ugh sounds like too much more set up to swim. SO for  now… I am  aware that the mind has endless ability to explore AND  find focus as I glide through the water, or walk , or hike, but for me the “skill set” of sitting or lying  in meditation and keeping a mantra  still does not compare. Still working on it though 🙂

Namaste.

PS my run on sentences in my writing  that my blog software gently reminds me of will hopefully improve as my mantras get more locked down 🙂

Mastering mind body issues concerning matters of the heart

heart condtion hero inspiring
Training for triathlon gave Karen belief in herself despite all the physical challenges her heart presented her with.

My heart goes out with compassion and  personal curiosity to the  people who have worked hard mastering their mind over their body issues,  go from feeling like dirt to feeling, and stay committed to feeling  delicious.

While doing laps at Cactus Pool this past summer  I met an inspiring woman that really carried that thought home.

Side note: I have to say doing laps at Cactus pool is inspiring . Being there during lap time I am surrounded not by grade school,  high school or even college swim teams practicing, while I do my laps. Do not get me wrong I find those groups to be entertaining and  inspiring too. These lap times though  are filled with swimmers of varied adult ages that frequently appear to me to be well versed in the daily practice of doing laps … for life.  Or that is the story I surmise from most of them as I watch them. I on the other hand am more of a fair weather swimmer. I tend to be more fickle with my workouts . NOTE , this is  especially true when it is  below 80 degrees out side ( yep, even with the Arizona sun shining and swimming laps in a heated pool ). Honestly swimming inside with smell of chlorine bombarding me has never been desirable, and why would I want to when I could be hiking in this glorious Arizona winter ?  … but I digress.

When I  met Karen this past summer  doing laps I  found myself in a conversation with a woman who may have kept her health condition private for many years from her co-workers, and friends … but considering she was back in Scottsdale to have yet another “tune up” with a cardiologist at Mayo clinic, I was in the right place at the right time to hear about her true success story and to become  part of her fan club ! And I must say I have signed up!

You see  in 1975 when Karen was age 6 her pediatrician sent her to a cardiologist with a heart murmur. This began a life of procedures and findings  and varied surgeries that I honestly feel I need a medical license to describe well. She introduced me to words that I have never heard of. I am not going to go into the gruesome details here but honestly I can say it would have been VERY easy for Karen to never have become the Triathlon winner , and  medal winning swimmer, and  master swim coach that she is!

I love being reminded of all the ways we can go from feeling like dirt to delicious. Despite the fact that her mom was not physically fit herself she always was supportive of Karen pursuing being an athlete which has probably been the best medicine for her! It was in training and being in triathlons that she truly learned to believe in herself !  Although she is reevaluating the harsh reality of what being an extreme athlete can do to to the heart enlarging the atria ( ok I start glazing over when she talks that way ) being that hers is naturally enlarged. The path  she has gone through in life is actually humbling .

Thank you Karen , you embody the concept of going from feeling like dirt to delicious. May I wish you many many many more laps at what ever pace you choose these days. You are a true inspiration.

Portfolio life vs Inability to commit to one major focus vs Master of some vs Jack or Jill of all trades and how they relate to shame, empathy and self forgiveness

You know what I think may be even better than a good walk and talk with a dear friend! ?  A great solo walk / hike while listening to an inspiring  podcast.WHY? Because I can, without any psychological control issues choose exactly what I want to be listening to ! No need to do any  asking the right questions, choosing to shut up and only listen or  knowing  how to bare my own soul  (or not ) !

Good Life Project is a podcast that has never disappointed me .  I may have said it before but it is SO true.  ONLY problem is I am always in motion and do not write down /nor usually remember all the great references given in the podcast before I move onto doing other stuff.

Myth or fact : The way ti make anything look easy? By working at it, practice.
Myth or fact : The way to make anything look easy? By working at it, practice.

Today the  podcast  discussion  I listened to on Good Life Project with Jeff Goins ,”The Fine Art of Finding Your Calling ” is totally worth a listen to! This episode  really struck home on a subject near and dear to my heart and life. The term portfolio life has been totally in my face. Actually that is how this blog came to be! I wanted to see how I could ( pun intended ) weed out my passionate avocations/hobbies, interests/ hours of  time I spend without wanting to stop and resolve if and what would be appropriate addition to my vocations.    I also wanted  to see if this would be a great  way to reignite old passions of mine,to see if a new approach would be the spark I was looking for! SO here to to shaking up avocations/ hobbies/ and dabbling  with dreams of differnt income streams! Talk can be cheap, or expensive I guess once you get a great speaking circuit gig going 🙂

Listening to this  podcast today confirmed to me that being a  master of “some”  vs a  Jack or Jill of all trades was probably what I am  exploring… that is compared to my wearing the  “I am a photographer badge ” proudly as if I “should ” not confuse people with all the other wonderful creative outlets that were dear to me.

SO I get inside to do my notoriously long to do list ( which included make a point of doing a post on this site ) and then I go outside in the ( warm but not brutal heat) to work more on one of my other on going passions – the garden, and  got side tracked ( no surprise) while taking down the Sukkah … all while listening to the Big Magic Podcast with Elizabeth Gilbert. Yep , it was meant to be. Brene Brown and Elizabeth talking together truly reminds me of a great heart to heart with some of my dear friends. So what is the take away? MANY, lets see… I  will likely have to edit this post to really give more of the gist but a few of the loud and clears for me:

When we fail at a creative undertaking / or biz or ( fill in the blank of any major project you have invested bookoo time and bucks and emotions in)  it is not the time to negate inspiration. the antidote for that shame is empathy . And when it comes to discipline being the hallmark of getting these creative undertakings done think again how self forgiveness for what you did or did not accomplish today vs beating yourself up more that you did not show the proper amount of discipline.

Amen to that sistas.

And with that said . My big man work gloves that I wear on top of my skinny gloves to protect me from the pain of the puncture wounds from handling Argentinian Mesquite branchs with their 3 -4 inch thorns or the  Palm fronds that I just pulled off the Sukkah with their huge spikes…. seems spot on  for this particular blog post ( if I do say so myself ! )

When are you really most productive?

The mind is a wonderful thing to use. SO much or so little can be happening in there!

I love love love walking/hiking/gardening/treadmilling while listening to inspiring podcasts, or downloaded awesome brain feed. One in particular podcast I love is GoodLifeProject. Today as I was once again brutally aware of how many things I truly desire doing between the hours of 5 am and 10 am, I am out at 7am  making sure I got a walk in before it got into the 90’s and  I was confronted by Jonathan Fields of GLP as he spoke directly to me ( or so it seemed) concerning the issue of not wasting our personal  precious 5 star creative hours doing the stuff that is so easy to fall into ie FB, emails, news  etc. ( and yes I know that is a run on sentence, get over it. )  AND yet for some of us ,is there not a conflict between when to get excercise and when to let our creative juices/ productivity flow? And what of getting kids to school and the parents that are filled with creative sparks at that time.  SO when I get up  tomorrow and make tea even while standing in the kitchen waiting for that wistle,  I am going  to start writing instead of just checking my you know what.

Personal boundaries keeping you from your dreams?

You ever have the feeling that the boundaries you keep smacking up against are really the boundaries you have drawn up by yourself to not cross over to accomplish your own chosen goals?

Do you think this blog needs how to imfo re image making?

As this blog progresses I am seeing how it evolves organically ( pun intended). Wondering what my subscribers are really looking for here.

Please comment.

Podcasts that I am loving to have as walking partners!

whirly5570©_2013_Linda_Enger_Photography

I love taking walks alone to be with my thoughts and nature. But other ways involve talks with dear friends who always leave me grateful I took the time out to be with them . Sadly it is often  hard to schedule the walks to suit multiple  schedules . So I have found some GREAT new walking companions. No I really do not get to share what is really up with me on these walks … but reality is I do not miss it  or really need it cause when I finish my walks I ALWAYS feel it was time very well spent on multiple levels.

I am loving podcasts these days.

I prefer to keep them on my ipod and carry both that and my iphone when I walk cause…. well I do not like to get lost in trying to figure  out why I have problems when I try to text, jot down notes to myself,  photograph , and  listen to podcast on same device while out walking . Yeah, real mindfullness training 🙂

Audio books are great too for keeping my mind stimulated but I am totally connecting with podcasts  (  FREE through  the  I-tunes store)  No I do not get any $ from referring you to these folks… although not a bad idea at all . I so want to connect with these folks and have a dialogue in person 🙂 So here are the folks that have been keeping me busy . Podcasting is exploding, but so far I have found these to never disappoint me and our timing for getting together never takes any effort in scheduling!  Please note there is always great juice in these for my blogs too!

So if you want a great walk and talk  ( really walk and listen ) ,really do not care if you are talking but want to fill your mind with great stuff while moving those big leg muscles… check these podcasts out. I also find them great company when doing mindless work around the house or garden 🙂  . Call it a variation of multi tasking .

And if you want please comment on what you think of which podcasts. I know I sure will be cause they inspire me to share more with you! Actually I have been known to be babbling about these podcasts while in person with real life  walk and talk 🙂

PS if you want to let these folks know that I am available to be a guest on their podcasts…. I appreciate it.

micro workouts #1 of my new series on functional exercise

I love to share  links to great articles and  podcasts  I find .  I could spend my life sitting ( ugh) or standing at my computer reading and looking at great stuff!

Cool visuals still and motion

Insightful health ideas re nutrition  and movement and alternatives to keep us and help us get healthy

Organic gardening

So when Lisa Kneller with Bring Me  Bliss sent a link to an article  about squats

Check out

http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-18017/5-reasons-to-do-squats-every-day.html

But I have to  jump in ( pun intended)  and add my two cents on this great exercise.

There is NO need to go to yoga class or any class or gym to do squats!

• Each time you go to water bottle dispenser how do you stand when you fill up a glass or your trusty stainless steel water bottle or camelback ?

It is not graceful I know but try a squat and hang out for a few counts !

• When you garden or are picking up around the house try squats!

Trust me when I am mindful of doing this as comparing to bending over my back, thighs and tushy say thank you !

I plan to  insert my own photo to this blog but for now see what happens if you have an accumulation of 5 minutes of squats a day added into your daily functional exercise routine!
